Theoretical physics is a well known concept that has been around for years. Publications on theoretical physics have led to many useful discoveries and have clearly advanced our understanding of the topic. So far, such concepts have not been developed in the medical field. However the opportunity to improve the field of medicine with having publication on theoretical medical topics clearly exists. With this special issue dedicated to the topic of theoretical nephrology, articles are solicited in which the authors have little data or possibly even none. Instead they have brilliant ideas which help improve our understanding of diseases or even normal physiology in nephrology. The authors should base their conclusions on sound logic which may later need to be confirmed by actual trials. The logic behind the ideas should be explained in detail.
